How to Prevent Pop-Ups in AOL or AIM Mail

This article explains how you can prevent pop-up messages in AIM Mail and AOL Mail through a web browser. Instructions apply to Windows 10, 8, and 7; and Mac OS X and newer.

Prevent AIM Mail or AOL Mail From Opening Messages in Pop-Up Windows

If you don't want to read new email messages in a new window, change a general setting.

  1. Log in to your AOL account.

  2. Go to your AOL Mail or AIM Mail inbox.

  3. Select Options.

  4. Choose Mail Settings.

  5. In the AOL Mail Settings page, select the General tab, then scroll to the Reading section.

  6. Clear the Always Read Mail in a New Window check box.

  7. Select Save Settings to apply the changes and return to the inbox.

  8. When you open a new email message, it opens in the current window.

Prevent AIM Mail or AOL Mail from Opening Messages in Pop-Up Windows When Composing Messages

Change a setting in the Compose section of AOL Mail settings to prevent a new window from opening when you create a new outgoing email message or reply to an email in your inbox.

  1. Log in to your AOL account.

  2. Go to your AOL Mail or AIM Mail inbox.

  3. Select Options.

  4. Choose Mail Settings.

  5. In the AOL Mail Settings page, select the Compose tab.

  6. In the Default Compose Mode section, choose Always write mail in full pane compose.

  7. Select Save Settings to apply the changes and return to the inbox.

  8. When you compose a new email message or a reply, it opens in the current window.
