How to Access Gmail in Outlook.com

Setup Gmail in Outlook with these simple steps

What to Know

  • In Outlook: Settings icon > View all Outlook Settings. Select Mail in left pane > Sync email > Gmail.
  • Next, type your Display name > choose email preferences > OK. Log into Gmail and select OK to confirm connection.
  • To change "From" address: In Outlook, go to Sync email > Set default From address: enter email address.

To keep your Gmail email address but use the interface on Outlook.com to send mail from it, you can link your Gmail account to Outlook Mail to get the best of both worlds. Once you've completed the steps below, you can send mail from your Gmail address without logging in to Gmail.com to do it.

These instructions apply to any email account that you use on Outlook.com, including @hotmail.com, @live.com, @outlook.com, and others.

If you want to get all your Gmail emails in Outlook.com but don't want to import your entire Gmail account or send it from your Gmail account through Outlook Mail, you can set up Gmail to forward messages to your Outlook account.

If you've opted to sync your Gmail account, you can check the progress of the Gmail import at any time from the same screen in Step 2 above. You'll see the "Update in progress" status until the transfer is completed, which might take a while if you have many email messages to import. When it's finished, you'll see it change to "Up to date."

  3. Select SAVE to make your Gmail account the new default "send as" address in Outlook Mail.

Doing this will only change the default email address for new emails. When you reply to a message, you can always pick your Outlook address or your Gmail address (or any others you've added) by choosing one from the From button at the top of the message.

If you want to send an email from your desktop Outlook application using your Gmail account, you can configure Outlook to send emails via Gmail using the IMAP or POP protocol.
