How to Access Free Yahoo! Mail with Outlook for Mac

You can open Yahoo! Mail next to Gmail in your browser, of course. How about opening both next to your Exchange account, though, and have their new mail convene in the same Outlook for Mac inbox?

While Yahoo! Mail may not offer free POP or IMAP access, you can engage a tool that translates between Outlook for Mac and the Yahoo! Mail website: MacFreePOPs.

Access Free Yahoo! Mail with Outlook for Mac

To set up a free Yahoo! Mail account in Outlook for Mac to download (and optionally send) mail:

• Make sure MacFreePOPs is installed and the freepopsd service running.
• Select Tools | Accounts… from the menu in Outlook for Mac.
• Click + at the bottom of the account list.
• Select E-mail… from the menu that pops up.
• Enter your Yahoo! Mail address under E-mail address:.
• Type your Yahoo! Mail password under Password:.
• Make sure Configure automatically is not checked.
• Enter your full Yahoo! Mail address under User name.
• Make sure POP is selected under Type:.
• Enter "localhost" under Incoming server:.
• Make sure Override default port is not checked.
• Enter "2000" after the : following "localhost".
• Make sure Use SSL to connect (recommended) is not checked.
• Enter your ISP or other email account's mail server under Outgoing server:.
  • You cannot send mail through MacFreePOPs or Yahoo! Mail; you can send using a mail server you also use with another email account, though, such as Gmail or AIM Mail.
  • To use Gmail, for instance, enter "smtp.gmail.com" under Outgoing server:; make sure Override default port is checked; enter "465" after the : following "smtp.gmail.com"; and make sure Use SSL to connect (recommended) is checked.

• To add any authentication information your outgoing mail server might require:
  • Click More Options… under Outgoing server:
  • Make sure User Name and Password is selected under Authentication:.
  • Enter your log-in information under User name: and Password:.
    If you use Gmail, for instance, enter your Gmail address under User name: and your Gmail password under Password:.
  • Click OK.
• To make sure downloaded mail is never deleted from Yahoo! Mail:
  • Click Advanced….
  • Go to the Server tab.
  • Make sure Leave a copy of each message on server is checked.
  • Make sure Never is selected under Delete copies from the server:.
  • Click OK.
• Close the Accounts window.
