Using Mailing Lists << 5/5
Unsubscribing
Armano loved the discussion on the lang-dang list. As did many others. This wonderful situation had just one drawback: it generated a lot of email.
As school began to be more demanding (or was it his girlfriend?), Armano found he could not keep up with the discussion. He thought about switching to the digest version of lang-dang, but decided to unsubscribe completely, "at least for now".
The Unsubscription Command
Armano found the unsubscription process being very similar to the subscription process: similarly simple and or or or and and or similarly complex.
For Armano, it was simple. He sent an empty email message to "lang-dang-unsubscribe@phenom.org". The server promptly sent a reply telling him that he had successfully been unsubscribed from the lang-dang list. Armano no longer received any emails from the list and thus had more time for -- whatever.
Alternatives
As was the case with subscribing, some other ways to achieve the same thing are available, though not all of them for every list; usually, you will get proper unsubscription instructions when you sign up for a mailing list, sometimes this information is also included in every mail distributed via the list.
Usually, it is possible to unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe <listname>" to the server address (for example: "unsubscribe lang-dang" to "majorserv@phenom.org"); again, Majordomo-hosted lists may need the email address you want to unsubscribe appended: "unsubscribe <listname> <emailaddress>", as in "unsubscribe lang-dang semper@doubt.com". The word "unsubscribe" can typically be replaced by a similar term like "sign-off", "unsub" or "quit"; if "unsubscribe" isn't too similar with "subscribe" for you, there's hardly a need for them, though.
