In our latest feature on email stress and how to fight it we found that one of the main reasons for email to cause anxiety and stress is not the messages itself (though that is by far not excluded) but the annoyance of being interrupted. Even if it seems that you want to be interrupted and check for new mail every 5 minutes yourself this is unlikely to be pleasant and most probably it is the perceived need (may we call it an obsession?) to do so.
There is no such need.
Separating Vocation from Vacation
There is certainly no such need for private mail at the workplace and there is certainly no such need for corporate mail at home. This is why and where a free Web-based email account such as Hotmail (or `Netscape Webmail' or `Yahoo Mail' or `Netaddress' or any other of the unnumbered services) address can help you.
It allows you to clearly and cleanly separate corporate and private email. Of course you should make all your colleagues address private mail to your private email address to make this work efficiently.
Security and Privacy
But the reduced amount of stress is not the only reason for keeping a private email address apart from the one at work. All mail you send (and receive?) through your company's mail system is likely to be logged, backed up and controlled, similarly to telephone conversation. We will have a look at this and the possible legal consequences old email messages (even Monica has one) may evoke next week.
Certainly, though, if you are concerned about your privacy a second email account is a good idea. An alternative and also a good weapon against any legal issues is to encrypt all email and then wipe out the private key. The downside is that nobody (not even you) will ever be able to read the messages again.
