The Bottom Line

SAproxy makes it easy to run incoming mail through SpamAssassin's powerful scoring and Bayesian filters, sorting out the junk effectively. It's a pity it works with POP accounts only. SAproxy is no longer available.
Pros
  • SAproxy filters spam effectively using SpamAssassin
  • Works transparently and is easy to set up
Cons
  • SAproxy supports POP accounts only
  • Training the Bayesian filter manually can be cumbersome

Description

  • SAproxy is a transparent spam filter working as a POP proxy between mail server and email client.
  • SAproxy uses SpamAssassin 2.63 to identify junk mail.
  • SpamAssassin combines multiple approaches, including scoring filters and Bayesian statistics.
  • The Bayesian filter can be trained automatically or by importing mail from email clients in bulk.
  • Spam spotted by SAproxy is labeled in the subject or in a special header for further filtering.
  • SAproxy makes it easy to tweak basic settings, lets you allow mail only in certain languages.
  • SAproxy supports Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/3/XP.

Guide Review - SAproxy 2.5 - Spam Filter

SpamAssassin has a sophisticated set of heuristic spam detection methods, effective Bayesian filtering and a good record of spotting junk mail. What it did not have was easy of use on Windows. SAproxy changes that.

Easy to set up and install, SAproxy lets you profit from highly effective spam filtering transparently and comfortably. SpamAssassin has one major shortcoming: training the Bayesian filter is a bit cumbersome.

Unfortunately, SAproxy doesn't improve that. Not even Bloomba, an email client from the makers of SAproxy that otherwise integrates it well, lets you teach SAproxy about a false positive easily. You can import mail from several email clients to train SAproxy's Bayesian filter in bulk, though. It's also a pity SAproxy only works with POP accounts.

These imperfections notwithstanding, SAproxy is an effective anti-spam companion.
