Pennock's Email Notifier

Pennock's Email Notifier

Heinz Tschabitscher
The Bottom Line
Pennock's Email Notifier notifies elegantly and previews usefully. Unfortunately, you can't do the latter selectively using filters, and PEN doesn't support IMAP accounts.
Pros
  • Pennock's Email Notifier is easy to use and elegant
  • Lets you preview and delete messages securely, includes some spam filtering
  • Pennock's Email Notifier supports POP, Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo! Mail and many more
Cons
  • Pennock's Email Notifier lacks IMAP support
  • No filters, and Pennock's Email Notifier's anti-spam efforts are a bit weak
  • Pennock's Email Notifier can get slow with web-based accounts
Description
  • Pennock's Email Notifier (PEN) checks multiple email accounts for new messages periodically.
  • PEN supports POP, Hotmail/MSN, Yahoo! Mail, Mail.com, and Lycos Mail accounts.
  • Each account can have a dedicated checking interval and special sound in PEN.
  • New mail is also announced via a pop-up window from the system tray.
  • PEN lets you preview and selectively delete messages right at the server.
  • You can protect the message preview with a password in Pennock's Email Notifier.
  • PEN can strip HTML codes from rich messages in the preview or display them raw.
  • Pennock's Email Notifier supports Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/3/XP/Vista.
Guide Review - Pennock's Email Notifier 2.5-1
There's nothing really exciting about mail checkers — except for some of the messages they announce.

Pennock's Email Notifier does the announcements with style (you can even choose from a wide range of notification options), at least, and the support for many account types from POP to Yahoo! Mail and MSN Hotmail make it even more attractive. Unfortunately, IMAP is missing from Pennock's Email Notifier.

But PEN can not only notify you about new messages, it also lets you preview (part of) them and delete them right at the server.

It's a pity that you can't have PEN announce only mail from certain senders, though, or set up other filter-driven actions. There is some spam filtering in Pennock's Email Notifier, though, which can look for certain keywords (and their creative misspellings even).

All in all, PEN is a nice and useful mail checker that could still profit from IMAP support and better filters.
