If the essential feature of a bulk email app is sending emails in bulk, then Vallen e-Mailer is the essential bulk email tool. Vallen e-Mailer takes a list of recipients from a plain text file and a message with plain text and HTML and sends the latter to the former.
Since Vallen e-Mailer lacks both list management and a useful message editor, your list must be ready for delivery and messages are best composed in other (HTML) editors. This isn't too bad and allows for lots of flexibility — flexibility, and this is the crucial point, that's lacking from the mail merging process.
