It may look a bit home-grown, but under Maillist Express' plain interface lies a lot of power. The mail merging in particular is flexible and easy to use. It is backed by quite powerful list management with useful address validation tools.
Unfortunately, database import is limited to plain text files. But given every database's ability to export to such files that's okay. The message editor is another story. It is not more than the interface, and the interface is plain and simple.
If you use Maillist Express to send your bulk emails (and that's not a bad idea altogether) you should probably design the message templates in another program (a text or HTML editor, for example).
