Pro & Con Sender Verification in MailShield Desktop

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Lyris MailShield Desktop uses many scoring filters to decide whether a message is spam or legitimate mail. One of the pieces MailShield Desktop can consider is whether the sender's email address does really exist. A fake or nonexistentsender address is usually a good indicator for spam.

Unfortunately, detecting whether an address does exist is expensive:

  • it costs time and bandwidth, and
  • some servers don't support it.

You have to decide whether you prefer another, good spam indicator or faster operation of MailShield Desktop.

Once you have decided, you can enable sender verification in MailShield Desktop easily:

  • Selecting Tools | Spam Handling and Detection... from the menu.
  • Go to the Sender Verification tab.
  • Make sure both Enable domain verification and Try to verify sender for messages are selected.
