Know What TLS Is in Opera

By , About.com Guide

When you open an email account's properties in Opera (via E-mail | Edit active account...), you might be confronted with an option to turn on TLS for incoming and outgoing mail servers, but no explanation what this means or brings.

TLS stands for Transport Layer Security (specified in RFC 2246) and can transparently encrypt all Internet traffic. Usually, email account passwords and emails are sent in plain text from your computer to the server. With TLS, this communication is secured.

Of course, TLS only works if the server supports it, too. But you can certainly give turning it on in Opera a try.
