How to Block Messages from a Domain in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Windows Mail and Outlook Express make it easy to block messages from a particular email address. If you are looking for a broader approach, however, Windows Mail and Outlook Express can also block all messages from a complete domain.

Block Messages from a Domain in Windows Mail

To block an entire domain in Windows Mail:

  • Select Tools | Junk E-mail Options... from the menu.
  • Go to the Blocked Senders tab.
  • Click Add....
  • Type the domain name to block.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again.

Block Messages from a Domain in Outlook Express

To add a domain to the list of blocked senders in Outlook express:

  • Select Tools | Message Rules | Blocked Senders List... from the menu in Outlook Express.
  • Click Add....
  • Type the domain you want to block.
  • Finally, click OK.

Blocking Domains Only Works With POP

If you entered "about.com" as the domain to block, for example, all messages from "fred@about.com", "tina@about.com", etc. will be deleted automatically by Windows Mail and Outlook Express. Unfortunately, blocking domains only works with POP accounts. Messages from blocked senders in IMAP or Windows Live Hotmail accounts will not be moved to the Trash folder automatically.

How to Unblock a Domain in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

If you want to remove a domain from the list of blocked senders, you can do that easily, too.
