How to Send a Message to a Windows Mail or Outlook Express Mailing List

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Once you have mastered creating and populating a mailing list in Windows Mail or Outlook Express, the fun is set to begin. Now you can send a message to the list (avoiding that every recipient sees all the addresses, of course) in just a few steps.

Send a Message to a Windows Mail or Outlook Express Mailing List

To send a message to a mailing list you have created in Windows Mail or Outlook Express:

  • Start with a new message by clicking the Create Mail button in Outlook Express.
  • Click on the To: button (it also carries an open address book).
  • Highlight the mailing list you want to distribute the message to in the left pane.
  • Click Bcc: ->.
  • Click OK.
  • Type your email address in the To: field.
    • You can also use a descriptive name in the To: field. Make sure you put the name in front of your email address, and surround your address with '<' and '>'. For example, the To: field of a message to my C++ announcements list could look like so:
      C++ Announce <me@example.com>
  • Give your message a Subject: and continue editing it like usual.
  • Eventually, click the Send button to distribute the message to all list recipients.
    • Since your email address is in the To: field, you will also get a copy.

Large Groups

Note that you typically cannot send an email to more than 10-50 recipients. To mail a group larger than that easily, you can use a group mailing service.
