Be Careful with Irony in Emails

By , About.com Guide

Be careful with irony in emails. No, really. I mean it.

Irony is wonderful. You can say something without quite saying it. And irony is funny, too.

An ironic tone is only wonderful and funny if it is understood, however. When the recipient of your message can see you, or when they know you well, this usually works.

But with email irony can spark disaster.

Be Careful with Irony in Emails

Because it is so difficult to convey via email that something was meant ironically, misunderstandings are common and can lead to major fights. Usually, that's neither wonderful nor funny.
