Label Messages in Mozilla Thunderbird, Netscape or Mozilla

By , About.com Guide

Just about all of the messages in my Inbox are to-do items. So you'd think I don't need message labeling in my Mozilla Thunderbird (it works in Mozilla and Netscape, too). Far from it! These useful labels let me mark those emails that are not to-do items, and then I can focus all my attention on — them.

To label a message in Mozilla Thunderbird, Netscape or Mozilla:

  • Highlight the message in the mailbox summary.
  • Select Message | Tags | <desired label> (or, depending on your version of Mozilla Thunderbird, SeaMonkey or Netscape, Message | Label | <desired label>) from the menu.

Alternatively, you can also right-click on the message and select Tag | <desired label> (or Label | <desired label>) from the context menu. Or, best of all, use keyboard shortcuts:

  • Press 1 to set a message's label to the first label or (in Mozilla Thunderbird 9 and later) remove it if set.
  • Use 2 to 5 for the other labels, and
  • 0 to remove all labels.
