IntelliMerge provides the necessary tools through an elegant, easy to use interface. Most notably, IntelliMerge offers versatile mail merging using many custom fields as well as conditional text. It's a pity equally flexible list segmenting and analysis is not part of the package, especially since IntelliMerge does come with a database editor. It lacks direct database connectivity as well as the option to write back to databases, though.
IntelliMerge is not worthless when it comes to list management, though: it checks for invalid addresses and for bounces, and via a PHP script on your site can accept subscription as well as unsubscription requests.
You can compose emails using plain text or IntelliMerge's rich text editor. More flexible and often handy is the option to upload your message to a web site and make IntelliMerge use it as a template, which works smartly. While you can set messages for later delivery in IntelliMerge, more flexible scheduling might be nice.
