Make Hotmail Indent Original Text in Replies with '>'

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

When you reply to an email, it's common to include the original text so the recipient knows what you are reffering to. To set this text apart from your reply, it is usually indented by '>' characters at the beginning of the line.

Unfortunately, not all email programs respect this custom. Fortunately, Hotmail does -- if you tell it to.

To make Hotmail indent the original text with '>' in your replies:

  • Follow the Options link in the Hotmail toolbar.
  • Go to the Mail category.
  • Select Message Replies.
  • Make sure Begin each line with ">" is selected under Original Text Indicator.
  • Click OK.
