One of American history's most emblematic names was picked, at least in part, by the bearer of one of American history's most memorable names himself. Cotton Mather, who got involved with promoting inoculations in the early 1720s, some 30 years after he had played a role — which role seems not entirely clear — in the Salem witch trials, was the son of Maria
(née Cotton), about whom, alas, we know little, and Increase Mather.
