Her letters describe life at the court of France's Louis XIV. That, though, is not all. German princess Elizabeth Charlotte (then of Orleans) also writes about her youth in Hannover and Heidelberg.
There are little trees, boxwood commonly, placed on tables, for example. On "each branch, one would put a small candle" for Christmas.
Liselotte von der Pfalz's letter from 1708 (about events some 45 years before maybe) is possibly the first written mentioning of lights on a Christmas tree; from these, it is but a small step to large candles decorating fully sized trees outdoors — or rather small ones inside emails:
