The "urn of fate" belongs to Christmas.
A bowl big enough to hold a small present, neatly wrapped, for all is placed on the table. One after the other, the family members draw one, and chance or fate allot the gifts .
That happens at Christmas in parts of Italy, it seems (while personal gifts are given at Epiphany). Curiously, I have not yet found any Italian sources for the "urn of fate". I'll have to ask some festive Italians, I guess.
In the meantime, let's write our letters to Babbo Natale for those presents:
