Things don't look so good for Hippomenes, and now he's dropping something. Hippomenes seems to have lost an apple. Did he plan to snack on that during the race?
Wait! Atalanta has noticed; she has turned her head and — now she's running back to pick up the apple! Hippomenes has apparently dropped the greenish-yellow apple on purpose.
Now that Atalanta has caught up to Hippomenes, he's dropping another apple, and — oh, these apples are not yellow, green or red; they are golden!
