With a tweak dropped from the CSS3 standard but already in many a browser, you can make that highlighting on your site a, well, highlight: the ::selection pseudo-element lets you define fore- and background colors for highlighted text.
While it's probably best not to meddle with text selection in browsers, having to meddle with selecting text and changing its formatting every time you compose an email in Windows Live Hotmail is not good; it's not necessary either:
