If you've ever tried to get a sound — any sound — out of a trumpet, you know that trumpeting is a difficult skill to learn. Small elephants snort and sniff, too, until they master trumpeting, and their voice changes during adolescence until they can really rumble — communicate with very low sounds.
The deep rumbles, many so low that humans can barely hear them, travel easily and allow elephants to communicate over 10 km (6 miles). In the ground, the rumbles may be felt up to 30 km (20 miles) away.
