Red is hot and blue is cool. Right?
Well, let's examine a candle's flame. Combustion happens at the outer core (and more so near the bottom), where the flame is hottest and — blue. The closer to the center, the cooler the gas: the flame turns yellow and maybe even red.
(Of course, we all learned as kids that the chances for igniting infernal stuff are best near the flame's tip. This is true, it seems, for different reasons.) In any event, blue is hot and red is cool. This is true for lava as well. Lavabit's icon includes a speck of red — not orange — lava, so it is pretty cool (if a tad geeky-cool):
