On January 22, 1729, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was born in a small town in Saxony. Forbidden to publish theoretical works promoting religious tolerance, this genuine child of enlightenment expressed the same ideas in drama: Nathan the Wise celebrates fruitful coexistence of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Throughout Lessing's lifetime, performing the play was prohibited.
