Media theorists like to theorize that no medium ever (fully) replaces another medium. The existing media are complemented by the new medium (while, just in line with that, the new ways of expression unique to the new medium will take some time to develop). And whenever something new is established and thriving, a renaissance of the old is just around the corner. Idyllic hours of landline talking, anyone?
The book has not replaced oral teaching, radio has not replaced newspapers, film has not replaced theater, television has not replaced anything, the web has not replaced mail order catalogs, instant messaging has not replaced the telephone, and so on. What about yodeling? Anyway, instant messaging is not the telephone:
