Artificially splitting the atom is not so tiny a task, especially considering the year is 1919. On January 3, 1919, Ernest Rutherford announced that he had achieved it. More than a year earlier, alpha particles shot at nitrogen gas had resulted in a small amount of hydrogen — effectively a breakup of the atom.
