Some 30 or 40 km (20 miles) south of Novosibirsk, the beautiful Siberian nature is interrupted by a curious assembly of impressively plain buildings: Akademgorodok. Set up in the 1950s as a center of nuclear physics, geology, mathematics, economics, chemistry and other sciences to boost development in Siberia, Akademgorodok ("small academic town") was a cosy home to thousands of scientists shipped there in droves from Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Of course, looking at old photos of Akademgorodok evokes the nostalgic feeling that old photos always evoke. But there is one curiosity that keeps puzzling me. Why are almost all the photographs, those from the 1960s in particular, bedecked by a bus in the front? — Akademgorodok's signature bus if you like, not unlike the signature you can set up in AIM Mail:
