Respect Mailing List Customs

The first message I send to any mailing list is always typed with cold, sweaty fingers and followed by — silence (at least I didn't get it wrong in a way that was important enough for complaints).
What is okay here may be an affront there. Customs differ from mailing list to mailing list, and you should respect each.
